The Hampton Rovers Football Club is excited to announce Daniel Hughes as the new Senior Coach for season 2017 and beyond.

After a long and extensive selection process, with many quality applicants, Hughes was formally offered the role, which he enthusiastically accepted.

Originally hailing from the Ballarat suburb of Sebastopol, Hughes relocated to Melbourne joining the Cheltenham Football Club, where he played 165 games. He was Playing Coach of the Rosella’s reserves team from 2006-2008 and Senior Assistant in 2011. In 2012, Hughes entered the VAFA, becoming Senior Assistant to Nathan Brown at Old Melbournians from 2012-2013, before joining Brown as dual coach in 2014. More recently, Hughes coached Old Haileybury in 2015-2016, which included the 2015 premiership in Premier C.

Hughes’ focus for the Rovers is both on and off the field. With a young and extremely talented senior playing list, he looks forward to continuing the development of players, leading to on-field success. He also looks forward to further enhancing an already strong off-field culture. This includes further engagement with the junior football program, incorporating the Auskick program, supporter and parent engagement, as well as assisting the personal development of the young players.

Hughes’ philosophy is simple; fitness, fun and football.

“I’m looking forward to working hard with the group, and enjoying the journey along the way” Hughes said.

“I’ve observed Hampton Rovers from afar and I’ve always thought of it as a fantastic football club. I’m excited about the opportunity to be part of such a well-established football club.”

Hughes spoke of his enthusiasm to embrace all facets of the Club; “I love embracing all elements of the football community. I think everyone including the players, supporters, parents and sponsors can look forward to some exciting times ahead” Hughes said.

Senior President Stephen Anderson is delighted with announcing Hughes as Senior Coach. “The Club deliberately took on an extensive process to get the right fit for our young group. Daniel displayed key attributes we were looking for in leading a young group” Anderson said.

“A key message Daniel drove through the process, is that we are ‘all in’, which really aligns to our direction in the coming years”

Anderson went on to ask members of the Hampton Rovers to welcome Hughes to the Club; “Please join me in congratulating Daniel on his appointment and warmly welcoming him to the Rovers’ family”.

Whilst the senior leadership group have already commenced early training sessions attracting great numbers, official Pre-Season training will kick-off on Monday 14th November – full details will be available on the website and communicated to senior players shortly.

In 2017, the Hampton Rovers Football Club is aiming to field five teams in the VAFA – Seniors & Reserves in Premier C, Thirds, Under 19s and a Women’s team in the inaugural VAFA competition. The club welcome all new and existing players to be a part of a big 2017 season. For info about playing for the Rovers in 2017 – click here >
